North Chicago has one of the highest property tax rates in all of Lake County due to the school district’s tax levy. That is upsetting enough, but when you find out that one of the reasons is that a corrupt North Chicago school board member took hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks to steer school bus contacts to her cronies, it makes you sick.
Gloria Harper — an elected school board member from 2001 until 2009 — teamed up with the North Chicago School District’s transportation manager Alice Sherrod to rip off taxpayers and the underprivileged children of the struggling north suburb, collecting as much as $20,000 a month in kickbacks from bus companies, prosecutors said.
Sentencing Harper Wednesday, Coleman said it “boggles my mind” that Harper and Sherrod could get away with such a large scam for nine years without being caught.
“What are voters thinking of?” she said of Harper’s repeated re-election, adding that public corruption is “a plague upon our society.”
